hear the knock, knock, knock when she cries

Last night was Noche Buena, which is not my favorite holiday of the year (that's Thanksgiving, because I was raised bireligional and Thanksgiving's about the only thing everyone agrees on; as much as internet drama is one of my fandoms, I am not down with family drama on holidays), but is a very close second because we always celebrate it with the family we have chosen, not the one we cannot escape. Last night was lechon (but chicken for me) and yuca and rice and beans and arepas and tres leches and flan and something that wasn't pan de bono, but was the Brazilian version of it, a little less sweet. The one downside was how horribly sick I got at the end, to the point where I nearly spent the night in the bathroom rather than in bed. But I got sleep and then my mother presented me with a new lens for my camera and we gave my cat her present and then it was time to eat and I think we're going to my grandparents' for dinner.

And, yes, today is Christmas, so a merry that to you and a happy Hanukkah because that's still going down, which means Yuletide. I read so much this morning, but here are the ones I especially liked.

Dibs, HIMYM, Barney/Robin, Explicit. This is so good. A lot of what I want to say about it is spoilery, and there's a point where it would feel contrived, but it's Barney and yes, this is exactly how it would have happened and it's a lot of what you don't usually get in fic, especially for a pairing people are super intense about, and now I will shut up and tell you this is the one to read.

Grayson, The Keys, the Sword, and the Tester, Honorverse, Abigail Hearns. Abigail is my favorite secondary character in Honorverse, except when Mike Henke is, and I read the prompt for this yesterday and went "want" because Abigail! And the tension she lives under and in and through and finding her feet on Manticore. I'm easy for Honorverse fic, especially for Abigail, but this is still good.

Between, Greek, permutations of Cappie/Casey/Evan, Explicit. Holy shit. Holy shit. I love breakups, okay, and this is full of them, as it kind of has to be, since it's freshman year fic! This one is really good and may be my number one of this Yuletide.

A Divine Taste For Travel and Witticism, Badass Women in History RPF. Look, I had to recommend this even before I actually read it, because there's Eleanor of Aquitaine, her most awesome descendant Abigail Adams, and Eleanor Roosevelt hanging out in Heaven! And there's more, too. Some excellent worldbuilding and oh yeah, Jane Austen.

Rilla of Toronto, Anne of Green Gables, Rilla/Ken. It's a modern AU based off of my favorite book in my favorite series of all time. Go read it now. If you didn't think I was going to want to marry this fic, you haven't met me yet, which is cool! Come meet me! Read this fic.

Daughters Like This, Anne of Green Gables, Una Meredith. UNAFIC!!!!!!!! I love Una so much and this ends with something that I read so strongly as Una/Di in the most perfect way, the kind that makes you go "how did I never want that pairing?" And it's Una, but a much stronger Una than we get in the books and that makes it even better.

The Hunt For Man-Yu-El, Aladdin, Jasmine. This is another one where I read the prompt when the Madness prompts went up and went "oh holy wow, WANT" over. It's ... okay, it's Aladdin as sci-fi and post-apocalyptic and amazing.

At the spring, 14th Century RPF. King Jadwiga of Poland. Go look at it now.

Approval, Vorkosigan Saga, Mark/Kareen. Kareen is my favorite and this could almost be everything about why I do. Mark being insecure and the Gang and Kareen being Kareen!

A Fine and Public Place, Vorkosigan Saga, Ivan/Byerly. Holy shit. Holy shit. I didn't know I wanted Ivan/By until I read this and it was there and Ivan was oh so very Ivan and making bad decisions out the wazoo.
